Begin in the town centre, where the Temple of Pythons offers an introduction to Vodún as a current religious practice. A guided visit provides context and helps explain that the site is not an animal exhibit: it is a sanctuary. Then set aside time for Villa Ajavon, home to the Zinsou Foundation museum. Built in 1922, its Afro-Brazilian style introduces another chronology: the city did not remain frozen in the era of the slave trade, but underwent economic, social and urban changes after abolition. Leave the afternoon for the Route of the Enslaved, which leads to the Door of No Return facing the Atlantic. The route can be covered on foot, by bicycle or by vehicle; on foot, it requires time, water and a willingness to stop. Do not treat it as a race to the final monument: the intermediate points are part of the historical reading.

The route is freely accessible, although some services and guiding may cost extra. The combination works especially well as a full-day trip from Cotonou if you arrange return transport in advance. Do not base your day on opening times found on social media: confirm directly that the museum is open, that guided visits are available and whether any ceremony or photography restriction applies. If time is short, choose between taking the route slowly or adding the museum; trying to cover everything usually leaves little room for understanding. Carry cash for small expenses, sun protection and water. The visit involves short journeys within the city, but the memorial stretch to the coast deserves to be done without rushing or the pressure of returning after dark.
