Planning an authorised liveaboard dive trip to Tubbataha Reefs

Getting there is not a matter of taking a day boat: visitors travel on liveaboard vessels departing from Puerto Princesa and sleep on board throughout their stay. This brings sea transport, accommodation, dives and much of the food together in one package, but it also reduces your ability to change plans once you are at sea. The park is a sensible choice for people with genuine experience in independent diving, who are comfortable on a boat and willing to follow shared schedules. It is not the best option if you want to combine beach swimming, towns, walks or free days on land. Before paying, ask the operator for the full itinerary, the planned number of dives, which certification and experience levels it accepts, how it handles a day of bad weather and what happens if the boat cannot enter the park. The tourist season is limited and dependent on sea conditions. Confirm the exact dates for the current season, connecting flights to Puerto Princesa and official weather advisories before issuing non-refundable tickets.

Visitor access is subject to a permit and conservation fee, and the boat must also be authorised to operate. It is therefore sensible to choose a boat included on the list published by the park administration and ask explicitly whether it arranges the permit for each passenger, whether the fee is shown separately in the quote and what diving documents it will require. Do not assume that the advertised price includes everything. Separate the cruise fare, conservation fee, equipment hire, nitrox if you need it, land transfers, tips and any possible fuel or port changes. Amounts, permit procedures and refund conditions may change: verify them directly with the managing office and the operator before booking. If you bring a drone, do not pack it as if it were ordinary recreational equipment: its use requires a permit. Photography and video must also comply with park rules and the instructions of the dive team.

Tubbataha protects two atolls, Jessie Beazley Reef and a broad stretch of open sea. Its walls and lagoons support corals, reef fish, sharks, turtles, cetaceans and seabirds; they are not a stage for chasing wildlife or touching the bottom. The practical rule is simple: buoyancy before photography. Check your weighting and fin control at the start of the trip, keep your distance from coral and animals, do not feed wildlife and take nothing, not even apparently loose fragments. Anchoring is replaced by mooring buoys to prevent reef damage; also follow the team’s instructions on entry, exit and currents. The park maintains a no-take policy and limits single-use plastics. Bring a reusable bottle, refillable toiletries and labelled equipment so it is not confused with other passengers’ gear. This is not a symbolic gesture: waste management depends on the boat throughout the voyage.

A trip to Tubbataha has a substantial material footprint: it requires long-distance navigation and boat infrastructure. Do not try to offset it with vague promises. Make an informed choice: spend longer in Puerto Princesa or Palawan instead of stringing together short flights, share transport to the port whenever possible and choose an authorised vessel that explains its procedures for waste, sewage, moorings and emergencies. It is also valid to postpone the trip. If your certification is recent, you have not dived for some time or currents concern you, use the opportunity to regain experience at a more accessible diving destination and return when the format allows you to dive with room to spare, not under pressure. Tubbataha does not need every visitor to chase the same species list: it needs divers who can observe without altering the site.
