Phobjikha Valley

Phobjikha, also called the Gangtey Valley, brings together wetlands, villages and fields around a monastery. It is Bhutan’s main wintering area for black-necked cranes, though sightings are never guaranteed.

The place

What makes it special

  • The Gangtey Nature Trail descends from near the monastery to an area close to Khewa Lhakhang; it is described as an easy walk of about two hours.
  • The Black-necked Crane Education Centre explains migration and the relationship between conservation and the community.
  • Cranes are usually in the valley from October to March; its wetlands and fields are part of their habitat.
