Chad requires postponing tourist travel for now

Official assessments do not all use the same threshold, but they agree on an important conclusion for leisure travellers: this is not the time to visit Chad as a tourist. One advises against travelling to the country for any reason; others advise against non-essential travel throughout the country and identify areas where travel is not recommended. Do not assume that a city, hotel, operator or local invitation removes that framework. The difficulty is not simply a matter of choosing the right accommodation: the risk of violent crime, terrorism, kidnapping, instability and landmines also matters, as does the fact that consular assistance may be very limited outside the capital. Before committing to flights or non-refundable payments, check again the official advisories that apply to your nationality.

Some of the landscapes that attract the greatest interest—the northern massifs, desert routes and the Lake Chad basin—overlap with areas for which different authorities advise against travelling. The north includes provinces such as Borkou, Ennedi and Tibesti in several of these designations; severe restrictions also apply in the Lake Chad region and along the borders. The problem is not just getting there. Long journeys may involve checkpoints, irregular fuel availability, fragile communications, changing conditions and roads requiring logistics that an independent trip should not take on now. A park, landscape or conservation project may still be valuable, but it is not, by itself, a guarantee that tourism is viable.

Travel for work, family reasons, cooperation or residence requires preparation different from that of a holiday. Confirm entry and registration requirements in writing with the relevant Chadian representation, and check with your insurer what coverage actually applies to the proposed itinerary. Do not assume that old information about visas, flights, insurance, checkpoints or regional movement remains valid. Share a contact plan with trusted people, register the trip if your administration offers that service, and leave room to change or cancel journeys. Avoid building the plan around night travel or the possibility of receiving rapid help far from N’Djamena. These are exposure-reduction measures, not a way to make safe a journey that authorities advise against.

Postponing does not mean erasing the destination. It can be a good time to explore the history of the Sahel kingdoms, Chadian linguistic and musical traditions, and the ecology of the Sahel without turning the expectation of travel into pressure on communities or operators. Patience is also a responsible travel decision. When official recommendations change consistently, start planning again from scratch: review the status of each region, health conditions, connections, permits and your consulate’s capacity to provide support. Do not reuse an itinerary designed for another date: in Chad, the context is an essential part of the journey.
