South Sudan Calls for Tourism to Be Postponed for Now
The security situation, fragile departure options and an active humanitarian crisis mean this is not the time to plan a tourist trip to South Sudan.

South Sudan has a history, communities and landscapes that deserve to be approached with care—not treated as an extreme-risk destination to “conquer”. But as of September 20, 2026, the practical decision for a leisure trip is clear: postpone it. Official advisories agree in discouraging all tourist travel because of volatile security conditions, armed violence, crime, kidnapping, health risks and the possibility that departure connections may change or be blocked with little warning.
The main issue is not inconvenience, but the lack of room for error
This is not a matter of preparing a more expensive itinerary, hiring a vehicle or limiting the trip to Juba. Authorities in several countries continue to recommend not traveling anywhere in the country, including the capital, because risks can evolve quickly and unevenly from one area to another.
The possibility that an airport, border or departure route could stop operating changes the very foundation of a tourist trip: it is not possible to rely on a straightforward withdrawal or sufficient in-person consular assistance in a crisis. Insurance also does not make this context manageable; policies may exclude coverage when someone travels against an official warning.
For people who already have family, work or humanitarian ties to the country, the assessment is different and should be made with the host organization, trusted local contacts and the relevant consular channels. That is not the same as recommending the country to leisure visitors.
Juba is not a tourist exception
The capital has air connections, institutions and some of the available services, but Juba is not outside the general warning. Thinking of a short urban stay does not remove security risks or resolve uncertainty about flights, supplies, medical care or movement within the city.
It is also important not to turn the crisis into an object of curiosity. The population is dealing with displacement, pressure on essential services and the consequences of conflict and climate shocks; a recreational visit without a specific need may add demand to resources that are already under strain. The responsible decision is to leave room for mobility and infrastructure to serve those who need them.
Mines and other explosive remnants are another practical constraint: their locations may be unknown, incompletely marked or altered by ground conditions. There is no independent tourist route that reduces this problem to a simple hiking precaution.
What would need to change before reconsidering a visit
There is no tourism reopening date that can be forecast responsibly. Before returning to the idea, look for a pattern of improvements rather than a single positive report: authorities in your country should lower their advisories on a sustained basis; entry and departure routes should operate reliably; health and humanitarian conditions should improve; and there should be a local tourism sector capable of organizing stays without diverting critical resources.
If that point arrives, begin by checking entry requirements directly with South Sudanese authorities and the relevant diplomatic mission. Visa rules, health checks, flight schedules and service availability can change. If you are traveling from the United States, also check the current State Department advisory on the day you book and again before departure.
Until then, a more useful way to engage with the country is to follow the work of local journalists, South Sudanese authors, cultural organizations and humanitarian sources, without presenting that interest as a substitute for the experience of the people who live there.

Planning conclusions
- Postpone tourism in South Sudan: current risks cannot be resolved with a cautious itinerary.
- Do not treat Juba as a stable exception to the rest of the country.
- Review official advisories only if you have an essential reason to travel, and check them again immediately before any departure.
- Avoid booking non-refundable flights, accommodation or activities while this situation continues.
